After 2 monster flights each and 30 offers of a taxi (¿quiero un taxi?) at Santiago airport, we left for the city centre. During the 26km ride, our taxi driver was keen to increase his English vocab, much to our blank looks, but luvkily the topic of football came up and we were sorted. We made it to Hotel Principado to find a very nice welcoming man who spoke little English but gave us the key to a two bedroomed apartment, very nice. Quick shower and we were off to explore the delights Santiago has to offer.

First stop... tourist office... well it would have been if we had bothered to note down the name of the street it was on and then there was John asking a policeman for directions (in Italian!!!) and claiming it's just out there turn left and you'll see it... 40 minutes later we happened upon the big 'i' and things started to come together.

Armed with a decent street map and some local knowledge we strolled through the two main market areas, attracting much attention from the locals... observed frantic game of cards on an upturned crate much to our delight. Our pidgeon Spanish allowed us to buy the 2 biggest icecream cones ever seen for less than 50p and we strolled on down towards the Picasso museum (which we fialed to find). We followed the big hill to the Funicular (a shed on tracks up a steap hill) to Cerro San Cristobal, a famous monument of the Virgin Mary looking down on Santiago. The views were amazing (pictures to follow once we get the use of an up to date computer). We then rode a cable car (the Teleferico) which was nice and was back down in time for tea.... well, a coke and a mini pizza..... Which was also nice!

Brings us to now, ie sat in the hotel with a couple of "Escudo" beers (Amber liked them as they had "Amber" in the guide book taste description). A quick change and out for dinner (Steak or Seafood....... tough decision..... life is hard!!!)

Until the next update....

Ciao
John and Amber (sorry, Amber!!) Amber and John :)

P.S - not all updates will be this detailed so enjoy it whilst it lasts or hang on for now, they will be more to the point in the future!
