Quarai was probably my favorite of the three sites.  It's a quick walk to the mission ruins through which you pass by a breathtaking thicket, marsh and around historical mounds of ruins.  There is also a special garden for the birds with a brief history about St Francis' association with song birds.   There was a  set of trees that looks like hands cupping the sky that I was particularly struck by.   The marsh willow surrounding the two trees were a beautiful burgundy color and the late afternoon sky was this moody blue with blanket clouds.

Coming upon the site itself was another joy for the spirit.   The ceiling is gone leaving tall earth-red walls stretching skyward, and windows casting artistic squares of setting sun. My pup was sniffing every crevice and as intrigued by the whole experience as I was.

We ran into very few people on the trip, but the rangers were available and helpful at each site.  I had no idea these mission ruins existed in New Mexico.  They are gems of history and I hope to visit again.  Having been to Bandalier, Sky City, Valle Caldera, as well as the four corner cliff dwelling sites, I'd say I liked this just as much, possibly even more, and it is less crowded.
