June 23, 2009
Today was a slow day in the garden, but still nice. The weather was amazing, not hot or cold and raining. After work Megan and I went on a run. We originally wanted to go to Teddy Roosevelts Island but ended up going the opposite way on accident. The trail was still really pretty and fun. There was alot of up and down, and Im not gonna lie it killed me. We ended up going 4 miles one way. Most of the 4 miles there we ran or jogged and did some walking. We walked the entire way back, except for 1/2 mile of jogging. I was sore after, but I felt good and felt like I had a really good workout. I was exhausted though and Im counting down the days until I can sleep in Saturday morning.

Got an earlier start today in the Butterfly Garden. Started out weeding while Jackie and Mike went and got the fertilizer. We hooked the hoses up and I started watering/fertilizing everything in the garden. Watering an entire garden takes longer than you think and I ended up spending the entire morning plus another hour after lunch doing it. I really don't mind watering so it was nice. Plus it was a nice day and not hot or humid. After watering I helped Jackie clean up an area that was pretty much a jungle. We cut back suckers and pulled weeds to open the area up. Its an area very popular for homeless and they like to stash their junk in the bushes. Jackie likes to make it so there isn't anywhere to put things. Working in public gardens is crazy. Alot goes on in them, and alot of it you'de rather not think about. Jackie says homeless really like to use her garden as a bathroom, which is really gross. I will defenitly use my gloves at all times in this garden.
So far I have loved being a rotational Intern, but if I were to do it over again I think I would pick a single garden to work on. You get more involved with that specific garden and you also get to know your supervisor better. As of right now I would pick the Victory/Heirloom or the Butterfly Garden/Natural History. Spending the whole summer in one garden would be a great learning experience and I think I would learn plants and insects better in those particular gardens.

On Thursday all the interns had to participate in a career fair. It would have been useful if we could move from one museum to another, but if we want to stay in Horticulture there is only one division. We weren't very social, but the food was good. Megan, josh, and I ended up walking through the Folklife some more and watched a show. On Friday, I prunned up the remaining bushes throughout the Butterfly garden. Working in this garden would be hard. Its a walk through garden and really public. People leave lots of trash, and the homeless go as far as using it as a bathroom. Jackie left early so I spent the rest of the day with Diana. We didn't do much, we talked for over an hour.
Friday night Megan and I went to Potbelly's for dinner and then went across the street to the China town movie theatre. There was a huge storm inbetween us going to dinner and the movie. We had to run across the street and in that time we got soaked!! We went to "Hangover" and it was so funny, I laughed the whole way through.
Megan and I slept in a little bit on Saturday morning before heading to Mt. Vernon. We thought at first it would be a morning thing, but it ended up being an all day thing. It was really beautiful and peaceful up there. It was nice being away from the city in the nice blue skies. The actual mansion wasn't that great and only took 15 minutes to go through, but the estate was great. There were lots of animals, even little baby pigs. There were veggie gardens, although not very taken care of. Also the distilery and gristmill was just so so, but they were only $3 to go through so it wasn't really a waste.
Sunday was a chill day. I slept in until about 10 and then went down to Caribou to talk to Calvin on skyp. His mic is broke and Im going crazy not talking to him. There is a Target less than a mile away from the apartment so I walked down to the shopping center. There ended up being alot of stores, like Old Navy, TJ Max, Dress Barn, and some other nice stores. I spent about 2 hrs walking around each, and got some shorts from Old Navy. I stopped by Legal Sea Food on my way and got some clam chowder, swordfish, and shrimp for lunch, it was delicious. I found Moulin Rouge for $7 at Target and watched it while eating my lunch/dinner. It was a great relaxing day, and very needed.
