On 2nd January we traveled from Mendoza back across the Andes to Santiago, the capital of Chile. This was very interesting for me as I had been reading Charles Darwin´s "Voyage of the Beagle" and he had made a trip from Santiago to Mendoza and back. Travelling from Santiago he had taken the southern route and coming back the northern route which was the route that we took too. It is a fantastic drive up a river valley and passed Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas, to the border post with snow laying all around. Then there is a drive down a lot of hair pin bends before travelling down a river valley the other side and thence down a boring motorway to Santiago. From the border post I traveled in the cab of the truck and got some fantastic views down the valley. The only problem with this is that it is pretty well impossible to photograph and so I don´t attempt to very much.

I had been to Santiago for a couple of days before and so I was able to concentrate on a trip to a museum containing pre-Colombian artefacts from the Caribbean, Central and South America. This had a very good collection of artifacts and almost all the signs were in English as well as Spanish.
