We were on the road to San Luis Obispo by 9:30 am with Robert and Dale. Dale is a young, professional roper from Hawaii who sat in the front seat quietly the first half of the trip. About halfway through he started to warm up to us and started showing his great sense of humor. He helped us quote movies and made us laugh a lot. We got to the roping and the guys saddled up their horses and got ready to compete. We sat in the bleachers and watched the event. We had a good time watching the competition and learning about the sport. Later in the afternoon when the roping was over we asked about the plan for the night. Robert said that most people just camp in their trailers; cool, we have a tent and sleeping bags. After that, we lost Robert and Dale for a half hour, but made friends with some of the cowboys. Eventually they appeared and told us to hop in the truck and we headed into town. We finally put two and two together that Robert was joking about have to camp out. Apparently we are more hardcore than cattle roping cowboys. On the drive to Embassy Suites Inn we started quoting The Hangover. As we drove around to the front, Dale says, "Is this the real Embassy Suites?" If you haven't seen the movie, be assured this was hilarious. The guys split the room and wouldn't let us help pay. What gentlemen! We found out that the room came with a pretty great deal. This hotel offered free drinks from 5:30-7:30 pm and a complimentary breakfast with the purchase of a room. We went to eat at Applebees and then headed back to the hotel to take full advantage of the open bar. We sat at a table talking and trying to tie cherry stems into knots into the night. We spent hours laughing and telling funny stories. Couldn't have picked two better cowboys to spend time with! The guys were scheduled to rope in the morning so, even though we were all having a great time, it was an early night for the whole gang.

The next day we got cleaned up and headed downstairs for breakfast. We all enjoyed the "make your own omlet" station and all the other yummy breakfast items available. We drank about 4 glasses of orange juice each and even made a coffee for the road. We returned to the same venue for the second day of roping and sat in the same bleachers, but this time we knew what was happening. We had talked quite a bit about roping with the guys the night before and had acquired much more knowledge on the topic. The guys both roped well but didn't come out with any winnings. They packed up the gear and we headed down the road to get something to eat. We ate at The Madonna Inn which includes a well-known restaurant and hotel. Robert had worked at the establishment while he was attending college in the area years previous. He told us about the history of the place and how the owner, Alex Madonna, had lions on the property and would host prestigious social events regularly. After finishing our meals we split a piece of toffee cake that was to die for, delicious!

We got back on the road and headed south again. The guys dropped us off in Santa Barbara at Terry (the firefighter's) home. We thanked them for helping us and teaching us about roping. We will definitely miss their great senses of humor and hope to ride horses with them someday! Thanks guys!
