We took full advantage of our ability to sleep in this morning, so we rolled out of bed sometime around 11. The majority of our day was spent lounging around, doing laundry, eating chocolate and checking the progress of hurricane Isaac.
Two brothers we met at the hostel, Marquise and Denzel, invited us to an open mic night at Java Cabana. We got ready for the evening and headed across the street to the coffee shop. Eclectic is the only word that comes to mind. There was a mixture of poetry and original music, including comedy, love, and politics. Marquise and Denzel both prepared a poem to read. It was fun to experience their open mic debut.
Afterwards we headed over to HiTone Cafe where Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears were set to perform. We had never heard of the group before but they came highly recommended by employees at the hostel. The band was awesome! They were a wonderful mix of blues and rock with a Motown vibe. We had a bunch of fun dancing in our biking cleats and meeting new people.
