Today Chris and Jon were nice enough to drop us off in Gastonia, NC. The weather was beautiful when we started for Columbus, but it got hot fast. We pulled over at a gas station in order to eat some lunch. When we discovered that they sold Top Ramen, canned corn and green beans we decided to get a bit fancy with it. We found a patch of grass on the corner and set up camp. We got a few weird stares, but we also had a couple people come over to talk to us and wish us luck on our trip.
After our gas-station-grass-patch-cook-out we hit the road again. About 10 out from the city the rain started to fall. And then it started to pour. It got so bad we had to pull over and sit on the side of the highway. After about 15 minutes a man in a car with a bike rack pulled over and offered us a ride. We felt bad inconviniencing him and getting his car wet, but it didn't take too much convincing for us to accept. The man's name is Paul, and it just so happened that he took a detour from his normal route home that day. We are sure lucky that he did! He took us into Columbus and helped us to find a safe place to stay. He even offered to spring for a motel room for us, but that was much too generous of an offer to accept. We found out later that he is an avid bicyclist and is leaving soon for Wichita Falls, Texas to do the Hotter'N Hell Hundred bike ride. Good luck Paul! And thank you for being so generous and warm, you helped us a ton!
