The rain from yesterday continued into the morning, so we waited it out and left for Hendersonville, NC in the early afternoon. While we were getting our gear together a group of locals mentioned a really pretty back road that would take us through Saluda and into Hendersonville. Little did we know about the climb that we were about to encounter. It turns out that there is a 1,600 FOOT ELEVATION CLIMB in the 20 miles between Columbus and Hendersonville. So while the ride was beautiful, it kicked our butts! The ride took us almost all day to finish, and we just barely beat a thunderstorm into the town so we needed to find lodging fast. After checking with local camping sites and having no luck we asked a local who was biking by for some information. His name was Brad and he said that he knew a family that lived on an apple orchard that might be able to host us.
Sure enough, the family agreed. We followed Brad to meet Eric and Donna, along with their children Ashley, Andrew and his girlfriend Jessica. They were such an amazingly warm and gracious family and we are so grateful that we had the opportunity to stay with them. They let us shower, charge our phones, offered us a beer and even bought us a box of doughnut holes for breakfast. Best of all they were wonderful to talk to and get to know better.
One conversation that was especially meaningful was about the importance of keeping a positive attitude. Eric and Donna told us of how she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and that she had kept a positive attitude and was now cancer free. She told us to keep up our good spirits and power through our adventure. Thank you, Donna! We are doing our best to follow your advice.
