I didn't really get up to much in Broome as there's not much to do there. I hired a bike for the day and went to see the doctor about my still extremely sore ribs and back and he booked me in for an x-ray. I tried to cycle to an area called Anastasia's pool but got so far and the road turned to sand which my hire bike couldn't get through. Lucky for me a local guy offered to take me in his ute (he had his young kid in the car and was a local boat owner so mum and dad it was OK). When I was dropped off I came across a couple of guys on bikes who'd had to walk along the road due to the sand. They were from Perth and told me they couldn't find the pool and had given up. I spent a long time chatting to them (Brendan and Adam) and we said we may meet up later that evening
That evening I went into town with Suzie, Fahdre, Pameila and Simona from the Kimberleys trip. It's off-peak season here so there are no buses after 5 and everywhere requires a taxi which is a pain so we made sure we got the last bus into town but then realised there's nothing to do except drink - too early for that. I'd eaten but the rest had a meal and we bumped into the perth guys and ended up going to the Oasis Bar, where locals and backpackers hang out. It was your standard rough backpacker bar complete with wet t-shirt competition and i got hassled by an aboriginal girl for quite some time. I tried to make conversation with her but couldn't get any sense out of her as she was very drunk and she basically wanted me to buy her a drink - I palmed her off to some guys luckily! All in all, a boring night really but it was an OK bar with fairly decent music - it's just the people and the tackiness that ruined it!
After a couple of nights in the hostel I moved into my own air-conditioned room complete with own bathroom courtesy of Peter, a local member of the couchsurfing community. He's originally from the UK but had lived here a long time and owned a local cafe and deli. He drove me to the hospital for me x-ray which was very kind and even took me down to a quiet part of the beach in his 4x4 so I could see the famous Cable Beach sunset
The x-ray came out fine so that was a relief although not much of an explanation as to what was wrong and how long ti will take to heal but nevermind. Spent $55 getting my USB stick cleaned of a ton of viruses I'd picked up from one computer which was annoying. Tried to organise leaving Broome but every backpacker seemed to be heading the opposite direction, plus there were hardly any other backpackers in town this time of year unfortunatly for me. I ended up staying a few extra nights at Peter's so i cooked Anzac biscuits as a thanks and cleaned the kitchen floor. I did a nice run along the sand dunes but apart from that was pretty bored in Broome.
Eventually I managed to organise hiring a car with Suzie from my Kimberleys trip and another German, Matthias who I'd met in the dorm at the hostel here. We discussed a rough itinery and sorted camping gear and tomorrow we leave which is great news as I'm going crazy stuck in this town!
I guess it would be OK if you are a tourist and want a beach resort, fancy hotel and to do tourist things like the camel ride along the beach at sunset but for me the town isn't what I want on my trip.
