Where I stayed
Pike peak state park
Sorry I didn't update last night. (read on for why).
Here's what I had written yesterday:
Today we went to Rock Springs and there was a huge chunk of rock that had actually been pushed up by tectonic plates to 87 degrees vertical. Yikes! Pretty cool though and we also visited a famous rock, Van Hyse Rock :P Josie and I had to go to the bathroom really super bad so we accomplished one of the items on our list and we used the woods. It was so cool. Haha just kidding, mosquitoes are evil.
There was actually a Spring at Rock Springs (no kidding, right?!) haha. A lot of locals drove through as we waited there to fill up on fresh spring water. They brought huge jugs to fill, and seem to do this often. The spring is actually an aquifer and will eventually dry up but currently the pressure and gravity causes it to spring up onto the surface. Across the street was actually a bottling company that just filters it once and then bottles and sells the water. Great idea!
The river next to the spring was flooded and very muddy because of the high water levels. Gross!
My legs are redder and more swollen that you can't even tell I have bites cause they're so red:P awful I know! More later. Oh and the Hochunk leader ditched us so now we just have to hang with a park ranger later today at Effigy.
We then drove two hours to Iowa and checked out Effigy Mounds National Monument: an excellent area. Natives built Effigy Mounds as sacred burial sites in shapes of animals, circles and lines. We hiked up a bluff to see some of the mounds and to get an overlook of the Mississippi. It was so peaceful and serene! The hike was around 2 miles. Then we went to dinner at a small business.
I'll update about last night in the next post.
