My friend - Welcome to the Carpathians. I am anxiously expecting you. Sleep well to-night. At three to-morrow the diligence will start for Bukovina; a place on it is kept for you. At the Borgo Pass my carriage will await you and will bring you to me. I trust that your journey from Sydney has been a happy one, and that you will enjoy your stay in my beautiful land. Your friend - Dracula.

This was the strange note left for me at the reception desk.

Greetings from Brasov, Transylvania.

Brasov itself is a nice enough little old town. That is once you get to the old town, if you can get past Dracula's blood (money) sucking henchmen. Jesus H Christ - every villain in town seems to be there to 'greet' you as you disembark the train. Anyone who has been here will know what I mean. Touts attempting to forcibly remove your bag, surrounding you with more henchmen, hand's in pockets, etc. These types seemed to understand English intermittently, but they sure understood the words that ended in scone, wit, head, off if you catch my drift. At least in Russia they would subtley rob you, i.e change the price, give the wrong change, added charges then just rant until you gave in.

It's been hotter then hell here, about 25 degrees. About a 40 degree change from last week!

The best way to describe Romanian food is Italian. Seriously, probably 8/10 places are little Italian joints, the remaining 2/10 being either KFC / Macca's or German bakeries (I am enjoying my strudle and coffee for breakfast). Food quality has been exceptional and brilliantly cheap. Think less than 8 AUD for a full sit down, dine in experience. Beers are about 80 cents a tin. Can on.

Old town is a nice place to just walk about and take it all in and watch the world go by. It's also a good base for day trips out to Bran and Sinaia. Bran had Bran's Castle to offer, old home of Vled the Impaler and the castle that Bram Stoker's Dracula was loosely based on. Sinaia didn't have much to offer except Peles Castle. Lovely from the outside and except for the armory, pretty rubbish on the inside. Hey, everything is being judged on the Hermatige from here in. I have standards (now).

Then there is the gypsy women who throw their baby at you, in order to make you catch it, so the other thieving basterd kids can rummage through your pockets and unzip your bag.

Luckly, I had done my research on these mongrels as I refused to catch the baby and it made a dull, pop sound as it hit the ground, indicating it was only a wrapped up doll. From the ground, it was then swiftly hit with the size 10.5 Palladium right boot, the real lift kids chased it down the street, to the ranting and raving villainous mother. Crisis averted. Mawer 1, gypsy woman 0.

Ever thought about getting a job ? No one works because we love it, lady. Perhaps as a waitress even, as at these prices I was tipping the LEI like a madman. No, you chose a life of crime, you reap what you sow. Is that another rant. Calm down man, you've losing it (note also cease to watch Air Crash Doco's at night).
Seriously, once you become stationary here the hassling starts. Its’s just relentless, just don't get your map out if your here.
Apart from these jokers, the locals here are friendly enough and all want to know about kangaroos and koalas, tell you about Romania and ask if you've encountered any of their villains!

Alais, I didn't bump into the great man during my travels, but I did meet and greet hordes upon hordes of his blood-sucking gypsy basterd henchmen.

Last week I saw a film, I believe it was a horror film!

That was Brasov. Glad I've came and had a geez (been there done that) but it's the first place on the tour that I'd safely say unlikely to return.
