We hit Highway 1 from San Francisco to Lompoc, CA today (about 300 miles driving, most of it on twisty coastal roads). Some beautiful scenery of wild pacific beaches, and a number of quaint lighthouses, but the road itself was REALLY bad for a main two lane highway (lots of potholes, juddering bumps etc). Once we spotted a huge group of classic Thunderbirds & Mustangs (obviously going for a Sunday drive with a club) which was cool. We stopped at a rest area/viewing area, near San Simeon beach, where we joined lots of other travellers watching a huge herd of Elephant seals sprawled on the sand and frolicking/fighting in the ocean - Elephant seals are the largest seal in the world (the males have the funny rubbery long nose that looks like a shortened elephant trunk, and the females have the most soulful & expressive eyes). It was a really special experience being able to see such huge animals in their natural environment. From there we kept driving to Lompoc, where we stayed the night at another Walmart.
