On the road again this morning. We're off to Memphis - but going thru or touching 4 states: Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee & Arkansas. For lunch we made an impulse stop at a small roadside diner called 'Galbreath Country Buffet.' Luckily they had a menu as well as the buffet, as I don't think I would have wanted to risk eating the buffet food! The kids had the usual: Josh had grilled cheese sandwich (like a toasted sandwich) & Kate had chicken strips/fries (battered strips of chicken breast), while Fred had a cheese burger with 'tater tots' (mini cylindrical hash browns) and I had crumbed whole catfish (yes, even the fins & tail was crumbed - but it was yummy) with 'Hush Puppies' (sort of a deep fried cornbread). Another American pet-peeve: Public restroom (toilet) doors that have an inch or more space between the door and the door jam, so that people can pretty much see you when they walk past! This seems to be in A LOT of public restrooms, in Rest Areas off the side of highways, and in restaurants. Some sort of security measure?? Who knows. Another pain: Highway signs/numbers that are all clustered together, so it's difficult to find which one you need to go on in a hurry. Unbelievable: Following a yellow truck this morning, down a 2 lane narrow highway, with the truck slamming on his brakes all the time, and then stying in the left lane every time we got to a passing lane so we couldn't get past him! Couple of ol' Bama boys, we discovered when they finally turned off. Funny town names we have been past: Brilliant, AL, Peppertown, MS. We will be driving past Tupelo, Mississippi - for those who are Elvis fans, this was where he was born. We managed to find the Tom Sawyer RV park www.tomsawyersrvpark.com without too much trouble, and what a lovely park - we got a river front site, so we are right next to the Mighty Mississippi. Also, free wi-fi, and this is a first - free laundry - that's right, we don't have to find $ & $ worth of quarters (25 cent coins)! Great location, only a hop away from downtown Memphis, and lovely folk running it.

bama
Hi kiwis,
sorry Tracey, I could never come to grips with those American names. What is a 'bama' boy? I cannot find it in any dictionary or even on google. Is it a short name for someone who rides the brakes on his vehicle or something? Glad to see you all took it easy in Florida, before hitting the road again. Love reading about all the food you are all eating. Have any of you put on any weight yet? Keep well and keep those log entrys comming. - M.G. -
