Since it's Josh's birthday tomorrow, today we all went to an indoor shooting range about a 20 minute drive from Janine's place in Phoenix. We paid under $30 for a lane, hiring a Luger .22 semi-automatic pistol and a Ruger .22 semi-automatic rifle, 100 rounds and a target (which was a green man shape called 'Mike' ) . I have never seen my about-to-turn-15-year-old-son so happy. Absolute guy heaven. We all had a turn at each weapon and Josh did really well for a first time. Kate was not at all keen to have a go (I think the fact it was real bullets freaked her out – that and the nice guy at the front desk who tried to convince her to have a go by saying "These are only little bullets, look at how big mine are," while whipping open his shirt and removing a mean looking black pistol from a holster and showing her a massive 9mm bullet!) Anyway, we all 'literally’ had a blast and boy, does a pistol, even a little one, kick when you fire.

The target we picked out was named 'Mike' in the catalogue and by the time we finished he was a lot worse for wear!

Next to us in the lane was a man firing booming shots with an assault rifle and a couple of rows down another guy had a pistol that must have used much higher caliber bullets as it too boomed every time he fired and you could see it kick his arm back a little. On the way out of the store, Fred and Josh stopped at the counter which sold guns and admired some of the machine guns on the wall. The guy serving asked if Josh would like to hold one – would he!? Fred said he was beaming as he was handed a fully automatic assault rifle.

Back to Janine’s for lunch and then she and I and Kate went to pick the twins up and off for some girl time shopping (Kate was estatic). Tonight Bruce and Janine shouted us a divine dinner at an amazing Italian restaurant called ‘Carrabaa’ to celebrate Josh’s 15th birthday tomorrow.

Happy birthday to you Josh. What an awesome birthday present, I would have loved a session on a gun range for my 15th. Are the armed services now your career choice Josh?
Looks if though the Tombstone visit was a blast also. Fancy actually staying in the town itself, and even going underground!
Enjoy the remainder of your trip. - M.G. -
