Where I stayed
Overcast and cloudy this morning looking out our window into the carpark of the hotel. Free Hotel breakfast was standard American buffet with the added interest of 'make your own waffles' – of course 3 of us had to try them (Kate wasn't keen). Hitting the road at 9am we hit a country road where we were the only vehicle for miles and miles. Stopping to use a restroom at a Wyoming gas station, Josh had fun counting out his allet full of pennies for a Hershey bar, while Fred was a amused by a local 'Chilli cookoff' poster.
For lunch we stopped at a little Wyoming town called Lusk. The restaurant was called 'Triangle 4 Cafe & Steakhouse' and so far on our trip across the U.S they win the dubious award of 'Worst Service'. When we arrived the waitress told us to find a table, but it was a good 8-10 minutes before she came over with menu's – normally you can hardly sit down before you're handed a menu
waitresses attention again – she was too busy with the locals....Also the Cherry Pie I ordered came out looking like someone had dropped it on the floor and then scooped it up again, it was all broken up and slapped on the plate, no cream like other customers were getting. We should have been more assertive and complained...Still this is what we came for, both the good, bad and just plain quirky. Funny how no one seems remotely interested in asking where we're from – except the Jehovah's Witness I met yesterday!! Maybe we should start saying 'Kia Ora' or 'Gidday' more.... :0)
Drove straight to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, arriving just after 3 so it wasn't too sunny and very few tourists around. I have to say that although the sculptures were impressive, they were nowhere as big as I was expecting. Took the obligatory photos, and walked some of the way around the very pristine paths that went right to the edge of the rock face with the
Presidents above. In case you're wondering the 4 presidents in the sculpture are: Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt & Thomas Jefferson
were from – first time someone has asked since we've been here! (Apart from the JW girl). Fred told him and then asked him where they were from, he said Canada. I told him that he was the first person to ask us that, American's just don't ask us where we're from – he laughed and said, “They don't much ask me either!” which I thought was very funny.
Drove back to Custer, SD where we are staying in a Super 8 motel, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise, as for the same price as we've been paying in the last 4 hotels we've got a separate room for the kids (with tv), the usual free wi-fi & breakfast and a indoor heated swimming pool – which Fred & the kids are planning to use shortly. Pizza Hut delivered our dinner, which was far more than we could eat, but still yummy. Off to catch up on our two huge loads of laundry, while I sip my A&W Root Beer.....
