What can we say about Dahab?
We slept.
We swam.
Pulled a drowning Egyptian from the sea. (long story)
Al-hamdu lillah "thanks be to God"
Made friends.
And ate together.
We shared cultures.
We ate some more.
We sunbathed.
And we ate.
Ate Barracuda!!
We Snorkeled.
Saw Lionfish!!
We slept.
Drank MUCH tea.............and sunbathed.
Dahab, directly translates as Gold, it was just that. A golden quiet Bedouin retreat on the Gulf of Aqaba. The guesthouses are numerous and always pouring hot Egyptian tea. Amazingly it was great to drink in the middle of the day. The town is a mecca for divers, snorkelers, kite surfers, wind surfers, and backpackers. All come, yet it remains a really peaceful place, minus the local touts who try their best to get you to enter their shop or eatery. Shortly after the Sharm el Sheik bombings, Dahab suffered a car bombing of its own. We met a man who still bore the scars of the blast, and was happy to be alive. Due to these recent bombings, the roads in the Sinai are littered with security checkpoints where locals are hassled and the tourists are given a sense of limited protection. Yet Dahab, thankfully, was back to its self and it's a wonderful place to relax. The coral reef ran the entire coastline and was full of eyecandy for those who made the effort. One other great aspect of the town is that it drew enthusiasts from all over the globe and we were able to make quick friends with Egyptians, a German, a Russian, a Frenchman, as well as an elderly outgoing Scottish couple who got us excited for India with their stories. We had a wonderfully relaxing time, and if any of you happen to wander into the Sinai, don't forget to look up Dahab. It may be a little out of the way, but it would be well worth the stop.
