OK, So Langkawi is the #1 vacation destination for Malaysians. No wonder, its comprised of 99 islands (a lot of them just being big rocks that spire up from the sea), is part of the dramatic island chain that hugs the west coast of Thailand, is Duty Free, and has a lot of natural wonders: like natural rock water slides, caves and waterfalls, along with many beaches.
The island is also up to its head with legends of every sort: each island has a legend of how it was created, and each natural wonder also has a legend surrounding it. All the legends involve either trolls, fairies, or goddesses - and I like that a lot. :D Another thing special to the island are all the water buffalo and huge eagles that call Langkowi home.
I dont even think I have ever seen a wild eagle before, let alone 100's of them!
So, anyways: good thing we decided to wait till the day AFTER the air show to arrive in Langkawi! We were right (thank god), and all the guesthouses raised the nightly rate to 200-300 ringit during the show.....(its about 3.30 ringit/$1)... They were charging that price up to the day we arrived.
When we got there, we bargained down a comfortable place for 30 ringit! I seriously cant imagine paying any more than 30 ringit a night - everyone offers the same thing: fan in the room and cold showers over the toilet.
So, the beach right outside our hotel is pretty neat. More than pretty neat actually: I have never seen so many seashells on one beach in my life! So much variety as well! We would walk up and down the beach, looking at all the shells - so cool! And you know those trendy lamp shades with the colored disks?
Its made of one of the types of shells found on the beach! anyways, in Hawaii we dont get these shells because the waves are hard on the shore.... but here there are NO waves whatsoever: the Andaman Seas looks like a big lake, because of all islands that protect the main Langkawo island...
We also notice that a few women go into the water wearing EVERYTHING - the entire gettup: jeans, socks, shawl and sweater...
Exploring the island, we immediately rent a motorbike. Its a great way to explore and along the way we see so many eagles and water buffalo and the random cow!
Early on, we drove to Legends Park - a amusement park advertised everywhere that is suppossed tell all the legends of Lankawi - what a joke! This park "apparently" closed down eons ago with NO attractions but a few moldy statues left that were probably too heavy for them to haul away!
The only thing there were some lizards that took over the place! - that was a waisted day, but I guess you cant win them all....
We have also already met some nice people at our local hangout, "Offshore". Chris and Pontus are special ops from Sweden on vacation. Nice fellows - also we run into our French Canadian friends that we hung out with in the Cameron Highlands!
Melissa and Jean Francois, have found us and we all hang out almost every night, enjoying the beach nightlife, playing with the glow poi and enjoying the free pool found at OffShore...
