Isla de Ometepe is a wonderful island that was formed by two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua. The name comes from the Nahuatl language- ome (two) and tepetl (mountain), meaning exactly that... two mountains. There are a number of small villages on the island and I have visited two so far but am planning on seeing at least one more before heading back to the mainland. I am currently staying in a small town called Merida- lovely little place in what seems to be the middle of nowhere.
I am really enjoying my time here and I think it is a wonderful way to spend these last days here in Nicaragua
There are two islands that I love to visit... they are known as monkey island because they are home to two different species of monkeys. One of the islands is inhabited by spider monkeys and the other has white faced capuchin monkeys. I really like the capuchin monkeys because they are quite funny and curious about people. I can sit and watch them for a long time without getting bored because the monkeys will make their way down the trees and play within feet of me. I am not so keen on the spider monkeys because they are a bit aggressive and quite frankly they freak me out a wee bit! You can not get close to this island because the spider monkeys living here have been known to hop onto kayaks and steal whatever you might have with you... including your camera!
I am not sure how much longer I will stay here... but I will enjoy every moment- that is for sure!!!
