So after leaving Puerto Jimenez I took a 12pm bus to La Palma. My travel book says in theory there's a bus, I completely understand why they wrote that.

I get to La Palma around 1 to find out the ``bus`` to Drakeīs doesnīt come until 5pm. So I pulled up a chair in a soda (a local restaurant) and had a coke. I waited, and waited, and waited until 5:10 when the bus showed up.

This wasnīt an ordinary bus, it was more like a mini van with more seats. Since its the rainy season, all the guide book say make sure if you rent a car you have 4 wheel drive. The route that we took, I now understand why.

The road (if you want to call it that), was not really a road. Its a one way dirt road with many many pot holes. Thats not even the worst of it, this road has many twists and turns, goes up and goes down because it goes through the mountains. In these mountains they also streams. 6 of them to be exact. OH MY GOODNESS, Iīve never been so scared. Some of these streams were really high. Mid way through our trip all the people on the bus 6 of us, had to go in the back. We couldnīt make it up a hill so the all the weight had to be shifted. About 30 mins. later we pulled over and we had to change buses. This bus was a little larger than a mini school bus. But I think they needed it for the height. There was a bigger stream right after that.

On the bus I met a local girl named Christina who was amazing! She called up a bunch of places for me to see about scuba diving, but was unsuccessful. She then asked me where I was staying... I said, I donīt know. When we arrived at Drakeīs Bay it was around 8pm and completely pitch dark. I thought this was a bigger city from the map. But the town starts in the mountains and goes down towards the ocean. Christina helped me find a place to sleep. We went to 4-5 places before we found a place that wasnīt booked. Drakeīs Bay isnīt very big. There's no bank here and there's only about 5 budget hotels before you pay over $75 for a room. I felt so bad, as soon as we found a place for me, the rain started. I offered to walk down with her, but she said its only a 5 min. walk.

My room is the best room Iīve had since I`ve been in Costa Rica. I have my own room (yes!), a towel (I brought my own because most hostels don`t give you one), soap, and then they helped me book a place to go scuba diving (yes my ear is feeling better). Amazing! Best thing of all, its only $15 a night!  According to my guide book I have the prime real-estate for this place and usually goes for $50-$80 a night with out meals.

So today, I did go scuba diving. A boat picked me up at the beach at 7:20 and then took me to the hotel. There I meet up with 3 couples on their honeymoon, a student from the UK and a couple from the Netherlands. Only 4 of us went scuba diving while the others went snorkeling.
On the way out there we saw I think 2 humpback whales. It was great. They were goes up and down in the water. Whale watching is a tour that costs $60 or more around here and I got to see it for free! smile.

We got to the dive spot which was good. We did both of our dives at Isles de Cano.  We saw about 6 white tip reef sharks, a lobster, snapper, manta rays, sting rays, and a moray eel (a small one). The sharks were cool. Small sharks that really didnīt interact with us. After the dive we went ashore and they had lunch for us (something I was not expecting). We had sandwiches, fruit, tuna, and potato salad. I had no idea this was included but I ate up and ate well. I ate so much Iīm still full and its dinner time. After chilling out Isles de Cano we left to go back for our second dive. The second dive wasnīt as good, but we saw more sharks, an octopus, and  a lot fish.

On the way back we spotted false killer whales which I swear were playing tricks with us. They kept riding up along and under the boat. I have some good pictures of it. Then in the distance we say another humpback whale but this time out of the water and crashing on it. It was very cool to see.

So here I am back on land and cannot reach this indigenous family to postpone my return. I would love to go on sat. and Sunday and just chill out for 2 more days here. Its so beautiful. Iīll try again tonight and night, Iīll call in the morning.

Hope all is well! Until next time.

WOW!
Wow Ally, everything sounds great. I have never scuba dive before, let alone see ocean sharks, whales, and other living creatures. I live the experience through you. - Be Well. Catherine
