On our second day in St Petersburg we took a bus trip out to Peterhof which is a series of palaces and gardens laid out on the orders of Peter the Great. Most of our time was spent in the Grand Palace fighting our way through the hordes of rude tourists and being accosted by the even more rude attendants. Things started off badly when our guide had to try and find out who had our tickets. From there it all went downhill from the massive queues at the start of the tour while we put on stupid shoe covers. In all of our touring through some of the most prestigious and old buildings in the world have we had to do this, including the REAL Versailles. We were then told in no uncertain terms that we could not take photographs while being shouted at to "move along". We hardly had enough time to even see the place before being forced into the next room. After about half an hour of this we could hardly wait to get out of the palace. Not my favourite visit by any stretch of the imagination.

After finally breaking out into the gardens we spent some time around the Grand Cascade and the Samson Fountain in the Lower Garden, which retrieved the situation, to a certain degree. The only problem was that we had spent so much time fighting the masses in the palace that we had very little time left to spend in the gardens.

After the return journey back to St Petersburg, which is just over an hour away, we bid farewell to our guide Anna who did a sterling job despite the odds being stacked against her. We boarded the Norwegian Star for the next leg of our cruise after some retail therapy in the cruise terminal where they had an amazing selection of Babushka dolls and imitation Faberge eggs.
