Desert camps

Three days driving down the coast of Western Sahara with bush camps each night.  Never from from the coast at any stage - within 50 to 100 meters usually - the road being on the cliff top just above the pounding waves.  Very stunning coastline.  All desert, sand, sand and more sand all the way. Stopped in small villages for coffees, lunches etc but probably no other reason to stop so just kept driving for 3 days to the Mauritania border. Well one other reason to stop; a swim in a camel drinking trough!!.  We came across one  so stopped for water and the opportunity to wash and get wet was too tempting to resist.  Hot water too from a thermal spring.  Not that I wanted hot water - its now 30 plus all day, every day.  Very sparsely populated.

Morocco say its their land and treat it like its part of Morocco.  The UN disagree ( what would they know?).  But Morocco won't be going anywhere fast.  I think they have stationed their entire army in the desert here.  For the 3 days we drove through I think we stopped at 30 check points.  No problems though, just recording you are going through and not stopping for good!!!!!!!  There are huge phosphate deposits here so economically it's good for Morocco.  Passed by huge processing plants with conveyor belts stretching into the desert at a number of places.

Passed through Laayoune as we headed south, bypassed Ad Dakhla ( 40km off the main road and it seems side trips are out), over the tropic of cancer and onto the border with Mauritania.

We got to the border with Mauritania on the 5th Nov just north of Nouadhibou.  Took 2 hours to get out of Western Sahara and then 2 more to get into Mauritania.
