I headed down from Lima to the coastal town of Pisco. Just a three hour bus trip, through quite extraordinary landscape. They call this area the desert coast - it is full of sand dunes, the sand is brown, and the dunes are as far as you can see. It's really striking, and I can't help compare this with the western side of the Pacific Ocean. Though the effects of El Nino are clearly to blame for the contrast to what we see in Australia.

In Pisco I took a day trip to Islas Ballestas and the nearby national park - they call this the 'poor man's galapagos'. It waw very cool. A set of rocky islands - no green plant life, covered in all sorts of wildlife - peruvian boobies, carmorans. some sort of mini peruvian vulture, little penguins, and sea lions. It was awesome seeing the sea lion colony. It is coming into the breeding season here, and the males are all on the beach staking their territory and their females. From here we headed into Paracas National Park. This is a continuation of the desert coast area, and in the right season (which isn't now, unfortunately) flamingo's come here to breed. There are some pretty impressive cliffs dropping to the ocean, and La Catedral, which is similar to the Apostles along the southern coast of Victoria in Australia.

Watch this space pictures are coming soon. When I get this crazy technology worked out...

Wow!
Looks amazing Al! Love the guitar playing man-prune and the festive choice of house paint! I'm also strongly resisting the temptation to make comment on the 'peruvian boobies' and 'the males are all on the beach staking their territory and their females' although somehow the two seem strangely related...

Looking forward to more!
JB
