On the scheduled first day for Alessandro and Luca, Ali took the boys (and Chiara) downstairs (Lorenzo had an early meeting) from the service apartment we were in at the time and waited at the appointed hour. We waited...and waited... and no bus appeared. Realizing something had gone wrong we hopped in a taxi and raced to school with the rest of the Shanghai traffic. We arrived just in time for the start of the school day!
The boys dressed in their school uniforms for their first day. They were nervous but pretending otherwise.
Adjustment to school has been relatively smooth for all. The boys miss their friends at St. Catherine's and are adapting to a new method of instruction. They are learning about tests every week and instruction in a new language everyday! At first the language was very hard for them but now they enjoy telling their father they are better at speaking Mandarin than he is! They look forward to sharing their new knowledge with their friends in Houston.
Alessandro's teacher is Mrs. Venema (Australian) and Luca's teacher's name is Ms. Laudenheimer (American, believe it or not). We miss St. Catherine's but this environment provides another opportunity for growth and learning. SCIS is an international school is Shanghai. We liked it the best because of its focus on living in a new environment and learning the culture and Mandarin everyday is a great bonus. Attending meetings at the school is like attending a session at the UN. No one place is over represented. Alessandro has friends from China, India, England, Germany, Holland and Lithowania and Luca's friends are from Japan, India, Korea, Philippines, Sweden, Taiwan and the US. People travel all over the world on their holidays. We find out all kinds of things about all the places in the world. Alessandro and Luca are picked-up by a big blue van (#57) at 7:25 and dropped off at 3:40.
Chiara couldn't wait to get to school. She missed the whole first week with a fever that Luca had had the week before missing a full week himself. When her day came she was excited and ready to go.
She loves her teacher Ms. Breffini (Irish) who is wonderful! She is a great Montessori teacher just like our St. Catherine's teachers in Houston. Chiara rides a yellow van to school everyday with other students from the school. She is picked-up at 8:45 and dropped off at 3:30. No half days for this one!!! Chiara doesn't need to wear her uniform to school everyday only when she goes on field trips. Chiara's school has a special purple door.
Every day Chiara, and all the children, get inspected for hand and mouth disease? Something that happens to all children in China?
Chiara proudly carries her backpack and other special things needed for school. She is so happy here - singing and laughing all day long, when she is not yelling and hitting her brothers. Here she is after her first day at school before dinner...
