Nugget City...NOT a destination spot. We were lucky to find a place to stay, most of the other gas stations and lodging (what other lodging?!) were closed for the winter within about 300+ kilometers. Since we weren't prepared to drive another 6+ hours in the northern darkness, we stopped for the night. The water smelled weird, the dog wouldn't walk in the snow because it was about 20F below freezing, and we worried that the truck would start in the morning...

We did, however, stop in the middle of the road, kill the headlights, and stop to enjoy the stars for a few moments. Since there aren't lights (not few lights, not distant lights, there are NO freaking lights anywhere), the sky is incredibly dark. You'd be amazed as to how much light headlights put out when you're in utter darkness. It's fascinating. The three or four lights that a gas station or motel might have barely put out any light. If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll see if I can get some night shots of the stars.

Anyway, I couldn't find the big dipper because there were so many other bright stars in the sky that my untrained eye couldn't pick it out. (I can ALWAYS find the big dipper.) The Milky Way was straight above us, and just about looked like a cloud that just sat above the truck. I LOVE the stars, and I think this was Doug's first experience with true darkness. I'd gotten a taste in Montana, and probably don't remember well enough to remember if it was THIS dark...but I somehow doubt that even Big Sky Country can hold a flame to even the southern end of the Yukon Territory. Montana has towns...YT has one town (literally, and it was 6 hours west of us), and then only tiny villages. Needless to say, it was DARK...BLACKNESS, really.
