The Otago Peninsula is just outside of Dunedin, and as its name suggests its a peninsula which juts out into the sea just outside of the city.
Being located right by 2 sea climated on a very important continental shelf this peninsula boasts tons of wildlife - the reason why we visited!
So, that day it was raining all morning and eventually we drove through Dunedin and out onto the peninsula we stopped and visited New Zealands only castle - Larnach Castle. This Castle was beautiful, the exterior, the gardens the furniture - we spent a while there exploring and climbed the tower to see spectacular views of the peninsula.
After Larnach Castle we drove past beautiful bays and beaches out to Penguin Place. Here you can take a tour across private farmland to the beach where the pengiuins come in. We saw lots of Yellow Eyed Penguins as well as Blue Penguins and New Zealand Fur Seals. The Penguins are endangered, and here they have a conservation project for them, so its not a zoo they are totally wild and they are not fed, they find there own food, as proof of this we were lucky enough to see a penguin walking back up the beach after fishing. They are just so cute Matt said we can get some as pets when we get home!!
