We left early again and continued north towards our next aim Ningaloo Marine Park. We had planned to stay in the town of Coral Bay, but its school holidays and there are only two campsites there which were fully booked, so we continued on towards the next town 150kms down the road at Exmouth.
Exmouth itself was nothing special, the emus which wandered aimlessly around our campsite and the fields surrounding the town where cool though, as were the cockatoos which screeched continuously in the trees.
We drove a short distance out of town to the Cape Range National Park, from here we went to the lighthouse lookout which offers fantastic views along the coastline and surrounding plains, and then down to the simply stunning and aptly named Turquoise Bay, here the water really is Turquoise and the sands pure white, the Ningaloo Reef lies just off shore, at last I got Matt in the water with a snorkel and fins (hurray!!) and we both snorkelled around the bay. We saw some fish and some coral, the sea was freezing though and after a while we moved onto the totally outstanding snorkel drift, the current here is so strong that all you need to do is get yourself from the shore to the reef and back again, the current will do the rest (hence the name drift) you literally lie face down and the water takes you over some of the most amazing coral you will see, stunning reef and a multitude of colours which are the many fishes living here, we never saw any sharks, there are black tip and reef sharks living there and apparently they usually aren't disturbed by snorkellers, at one point in there I thought it was be great to see one lying on the bottom of the reef and get a good piccie of my foot and a shark - then I was realistic and realised that I would have disturbed it by kicking and screaming and getting outta there as quickly as possible, in which case I may have been eaten...lucky I didn't see one then huh?!!!!
