Perth and Fremantle (which for ease I shall refer to the two collectively as Perth, yes they are both very different cities but the suburbs of one meets the other these days and so they can be classed as one!)
We collected our campervan in Perth, and it seemed to take most of the day, sorting out the paperwork and then checking everything over! No sooner were we driving down the highway the rain started poring out of the sky, we were in for a storm, which later that night included strong winds and us being rocked to sleep in the campervan.
First stop after collecting the van and our bags at the hostel we had stayed in our first night we headed for a supermarket, after stocking up we then drove south of the city to Coogee Beach, the area we had chosen to stay in. we set up and got a routine going pretty quickly, the campsite was a nice surprise - very clean and secure with excellent showers and friendly staff and people.
So the whole of our first two days in Perth had been taken up with getting the basics organised, on our third day we drove into Fremantle, parked up and looked around the small cheap shops that scatter the town, we saw a beautiful church and the town hall in the main square and then drove up to Fremantle Prison, here we jumped on a guided tour, our guide was a total hoot and as well as being very informative, he cracked jokes all the time - obviously being two of a few pommies on the tour we were in for the hardest time of all! Inside the prison we saw some beautiful Aboriginal Art work which had been done by some of the prisoners in their time, we toured the different sections of the huge prison and finished up where others had in the Gallows - which were very spooky.
I knew before I got here that one of my best pals from college was now living over here with her Australian fiancée and her little boy, and so I set out trying to track her down, to cut a long story short I managed to find her, and so after a long chat on the phone, Donna and her boyfriend Ryan came and collected us from the campsite the next morning. We figured that it had been close to ten years since we had last seen each other, it was amazing to catch up and chat, we had a coffee at the camp and then they took us off in their car (or shall I say Ute!!) to explore Perth. First stop was the beautiful Kings Park, a huge green area set high above Perth with gorgeous views across the skyline and the Swan River, we milled around for a while up there, before heading back into the city and visiting the modern swan bells building, we went to the highest point we could at the tower and then Donna (she knows me so well even after all these years!) took us down to Perth's shopping area and into an arcade known as London Court, we both agreed that in fact it was more like Canterbury than London and to the English shop which sells all things imported from home! We both came away happy shoppers...Donna with some cockles and me with Lemon sherbets and bonbons!
After the city centre we headed for relaxation at stunning Cottesloe Beach, Cottesloe is a huge sweeping sandy bay, its where people come to see and be seen, Perth's weather felt quite cold after the intense Asian heat and so we headed to one of the pubs which sits up from the beach and had a beer.
We headed back towards Fremantle and enjoyed some chips and a freshly brewed beer in one of the coolest pubs ever, the brew all their own beers, and you can see the steel tanks behind the bar and all over the industrial looking building, we went for the Rogers and caught up some more over a cold beer.
After all the excitement of sightseeing we headed back to Donna and Ryan's house, we met their adorable son who is so full of energy its unreal! After an unsuccessful Kangaroo spotting excursion at the golf course we settled in for a traditional Aussie Barbie cooked by an Aussie and ate the Kanga's not feeling so guilty because one they tasted great and two because they hadn't come out to see us that night!
That's Perth............
