So... long story short, I was hitchhiking (sorry Mom) to Gisborne. I got picked up in Taupo by a guy who was a possum trapper, on his way to the bush for a few days' work. I had about half an hour to judge his character (he had young daughters, seemed nice, was a hard worker) to make a possibly life or death decision on whether or not to go out into the bush with him when he offered.  Weighing the fact that he had a number of ways to kill me (guns, machete, cyanide) and that I would be going out into the middle of nowhere against my trust in humanity and curiosity of bush life, I decided I'd go.

I ended up staying two nights, trapping possums and riding around the back of the four-wheeler through the bush, sleeping in the hunters' hut and eating man food (bacon and eggs, steak and potatoes). Watching the stars and moon at night, playing Uno and Checkers. It was really peaceful and nice. And Joel was in fact a really nice guy. His family lived in a house in the bush, which we weren't far from, and they were really nice, too. We visited his neighbors across the road, and it all turned out really good. I know it could have easily gone totally sour, but it didn't and I had a good experience. Definitely unique.  I know I'll be hearing about this one from my mom - but you can't complain because I'm coming home soon!
