The next morning, we drove up the coast to Whanganui, where the woman at the iSite (NZ's tourism offices) directed us to a set of stairs, on top of which was a tower, from the top of which we could overlook the city and see where the Wanganui River met the sea. Then we drove a few dozen kilometers up the Whanganui River Road to do a hike. We walked through forest across fields, over hills, and back through the forest to get to a viewpoint over... well, forest, fields, and hills. But it was cool because you could see where it seemed like a wide river must have carved through and around the mountains.
