Milano!  We had a nice train ride into Italy, and arrived at the hostel at around 10pm... we went to look for some supper, and based on a recommendation from the hostel staff, we set off to look for a local pizzaria... and strains of Jay Chou greeted our ears as we approached the restaurant... haha it was opened by Chinese people, and so Debra and I ended up ordering in Chinese! It was really surreal, that being our first real encounter with Italians.
The next day, we woke up early to try and see Da Vinci's Last Supper - but apparently you have to make reservations anywhere from 3months to 3 days in advance... quel dommage.. but we moved on, saw the outside of the Duomo (3rd largest cathedral in the world, apparently!)  There were a lot of Allistair and I got tourist trapped.. yarghh and I knew that we would have to pay for it WHILE it was happening.. yet.. it happened.  A man approached us and thrust a bunch of bird seed into Allistair's hands... and then asked for 5 euros.. for him and his friend.  ridiculous.  luckily some plain clothes policement came to our rescue and kind of pushed them away... oh dear.
ANYWAY... we moved onto walking to La Scala, the opera!! It was really really beautiful - we stepped into a U-shaped room with velvet-draped box seats lining the walls and a grand chandelier - and the entry hall was absolutely magnificent! ufnortunately we weren't able to bring cameras into La Scala, so I have no pictures to share :(  WE ate lunch in the public gardens...which was not actually very pretty.. o_O but we were pretty proud of ourselves, because we managed to figure out the tramway system, without a map!  Next, we walked around the shopping arcade and the "golden quad", which was pretty magnificent...and super chic.  definitely an area to see and be seen.  Then there was this weird lull in the day where we couldn't really go to another museum (too little time) and there was no suitable activity for us to do... which was kind of ridiculous... but in any case, we meandered through the streets towards our dinner destination - the Navigli district.
Navigli is in the Southern part of Milan, and it's an up and coming district near the canals - there are loads of restaurant and bars, and we spent a nice evening there.  We actually met two students from the U.S. who were studying abroad in Milan - they told us they had heard about this part in the castle in central Milan, and invited us! It turned out to be this sports-themed festival, with spaces for football (soccer), volleyball, human foosball, even an outdoor ice-skating rink and a dance floor.  The dance hadn't really started yet, and the U.S. girls kind of ditched us (heh), so we just ended up heading back to the hostel - but it was a good night!
On our last half-day in Milan, we explored two museums, one containing mostly Renaissance art, and a modern art musem...
so, there you have it - MILAN!
