If Bondi is the mecca of the brash and the beautiful, Manly is it's family orientated antithesis. The ferry ride itself is a huge part of the day out. It takes a half an hour and you get to see the city centre disappear behind the twists of the bay.
The town sits on the very edge of Sydney harbour. This gives Manly two promenades, one facing the city and the other facing the ocean. These are connected by the wide street known as the Corso. This is lined with palm trees and shops all aiming for the surfers, tacky souvenirs for the tourists and of course the fish-and-chip shops. The town of course is not without its "Hungry Jacks" (owned by Burgerking) which seems to be more popular here than even Mickey D's.
I walked the Sydney side promenade first where I found a cool sign on the pavement warning to watch out for "little penguins" which apparently nest in the area. Alas didn't see any. After that I got a smoothie and chilled on the surf beach/ ocean beach for the next while. The beach at Bondi is nicer in my opinion but I prefer the chilled out atmosphere at Manly a bit more. It just feels like a small seaside town rather than an annex of Sydney like Bondi.
