Arriving in Belize you could fell the relaxed carribean atmosphere, with the slow moving friendly locals that would approach for no reason at all except to say hello and tell you about their country, and also a parting query of ¨need some ganja mon?¨ We stayed in Dangriga a Garifuna town which are a mixed people of afro-carribean descent. Unfortunately we were a week early for the national Garifuna settlement day festival, though every night there were groups practising for the big day, with drumming, dancing and african style chanting/singing in the streets. It was fun watching the energetic little old days dance the punta rock, a traditional dance where they shake themshelves across the floor.
It was a great town to relax in for a couple of days, from here I parted ways with Andrew and Tammy and headed to Caye Caulker a small island famous for its diving. The island was so laid back that it seemed there was nothing much going on, in fact it was really difficult to organise a dive to the famous blue hole (a, courtesy of national geographic). It took a while but finally got to there to dive and we were 99% guaranteed to dive with lots of sharks, tiger, hammer head and bull sharks. It was a 2hr boat ride out the the atol where the blue hole was found, in a smallish boat across 2-3 meter swells, it was a bumpy ride and what seemed like a few close calls as the waves crashed over the top of the boat. Reaching the calm waters of the hole (b) we had good dive, going into the deep blue 43ms down to an overhanging ledge and weaving through stalactites, formations of limestones from the collapsed cave. However there were no sharks to be found, must have been theyre day off. On the trip we had lunch on nice park reserve (c), clear waters, palm trees and white sands, the island was home to the red footed bobbie bird. At the look out it was like a discovery program with thousands of birds nesting above the trees (d).
This marked the end of my Belizian experience and I headed further north for Mexico.
