My..... (insert preferred adjective (journey, travels, adventure, early life crisis, escape, search for nirvana, quest for enlightenment, year of sexual enrichment, sabbatical) began like many in an airport, Birmingham International Airport to be exact. Not to bore you with the eccentricities of air travel, but armed with a ticket with China Southern Airlines, and my good friend Hal, we bordered our plane to New Zealand. The journey was broken up into three flights:
  • Birmingham - Amsterdam (50 mins)
  • Amsterdam - Guangzhou (11 hours)
  • Guangzouh - Auckland (11 hours)
There was no major occurrences that happened over the next 48 hours, except during a heavily jet lagged induced layover in Guangzouh. On a quest to find food at an infamous fast food chain (great start to seeing the world i know) a man crossed my path, dressed in his smartest birthday suit. To save himself from grace he had tastefully covered his swim suit area with two small sheets of cardboard, and was patrolling the streets for cigarette butts. However it took several hours, and a few thousand miles for this realisation to sink in. During the moment, it was taken in as something that regularly occurs in normal society.

The only in flight discomfort that was experienced over the 23 hours of air travel, despite being a 6 foot 5 guy on an economy class flight, was my choice of in flight movie. A word to the wise, if you intend to keep your gourmet plane food down over such a long trip, then films on self mutilation such as 127 hours may not be the way to go.
