Where I stayed
At 3am the alarm clock goes and its time to get up, our flight for Vietnam leaves at 6.20am! After spending far too long in Bangkok we're so excited to get on that plane and arrive in Hanoi. An hour and 15 minutes later we have landed and go straight through to baggage claim (we have already purchased our visas; everyone else is queing). In the airport we notice several signs that warn tourists not go with anyone offering a taxi service but to go directly to the taxi rank and an official person will get you into a meter taxi (otherwise you will be paying big bucks!)
We got into a taxi and literally every two minuites it was going up,then we realised it was in Dong (there is about 33,000Dong to the pound). Our journey was an hour and it cost us about $16 which is quite alot but I guess we would have paid a lot more if we got into another taxi. They take US Dollars here which is quite convnient for us as we are more familiar with coversion to dollars than to Dong, but already we're worried that using dollars could make our trip alot more expensive.
On the way to our hotel in the taxi we noticed that there seem to be hundreds of mopeds and mototrbikes on the road and there are no rules, they just drive and swerve other vehicles. Pedestrians have no hope!! We have been told that you just have to walk and the mo-peds will weave around you but if you hesitate or stop then you are more likely to get hit... ahhh
Our hotel is located in the perfect spot; in amongst the hustle and bustle but also right near a huge lake which looks like a great place to chill out. Our hotel itself is lovely, we have a little laptop in the room, a nice little tele on the wall and a shower which Sam is facinated by! As we arrive dthe hotel staff grabbed our bags and seated us in the lobby with welcome drinks and an infomation pack explaining our whereabouts and any scams we need to be weary of.
There's quite a lot of sight seeing to do here so that's all for now!
