Alex: Valpo was another great impromptu stop. It is right next to Viņa del Mar and Dean and I had considered coming here instead of Viņa but it didn't sound wonderful in the guidebook, either showing how subjective these things are or how out of date our guidebook is! Valpo is a busy harbor city surrounded by steep hills, we plumped for staying on one of the hills. It took us a while to find a place but we were very lucky and happened to bump into a lady outside another hotel who had a beautiful 4 person apartment free at a bargain price. It also gave us an opportunity to see inside the houses. The buildings are very unusual as they are tall townhouses clad in brightly coloured corrugated iron, they are pretty but also look a little scruffy. Inside is a whole different matter, they are beautiful high ceilinged Victorian houses - wow. We didn't particularly see anything but just wandered the city, soaking up the bohemian atmosphere and riding the ascendors, little cable cars that make the hills a lot less painful, The owner of the last hostel had likened it to San Fransisco and I have to agree with him, not just for the hills and quirky public transport but for the general feel of the place. Definitely a good stop.

3 years ago A leadership group from Wisconsin that i was with traveled in Chile --Vina Del Mar and Valpariso were our favorite part of trip . Especially the market area ,where we visited on a second story balcony with the locals , having elementary children from Chile serve as our translators ..
Can,t wait to go again someday soon..
