Alex: I forgot to mention before how fantastic the journey from Chile to Mendoza is. It basically takes you across the Andes, following a river through beautiful mountains in ever shade imaginable, mauve, pink, teal, green, grey, gold, beige all marbled on just one mountain. Really spectacular, as though someone had been painting them and got a bit lazy and couldn't be bothered to finish it off properly - but in a good way. The border crossing is at 2800m above sea level and the cities on either side are well below 1000m and as a result of the pressure changes things exploded in our bags both ways, fortunately the wine was OK!
Once again the journey across the Andes took longer than expected and we got into Viņa del Mar at 19.00ish rather than 16.30 as it said on our tickets! We found a hotel, doing our settling for one because I couldn't possibly walk another step rather than because it was nice trick, fortunately it was OK and had BBC world on cable (always a good thing). We stayed for 2 days but didn't do to much, in fairness there isn't too much to do, this is a beach town after all. We did the beach thing, until I got too hot and bored, beaches aren't really my thing, I think I managed a grand total of 2 hours but did top up my tan a bit. We also wandered along the front which was very pretty and generally chilled out and ate masses of Chinese food.
