¡Feliz Nuevo Año!
Alex: We decided to escape the mold and hard work of the Animal Sanctuary before New Year and head to Santa Cruz, which is the second biggest city in Bolivia and also the scene of some recent protests which have fortunately now calmed down. We were recommended a nice (4* darling) hotel by some other volunteers at a very reasonable rate so as our Christmas present to ourselves we have spent New Year in luxury. Not very exciting but fantastic for us, we saw the New Year in by watching cable TV in bed and ordering room service!
We haven't seen much of Santa Cruz but it seems very pleasant and not very touristy, which suits us as we just want to relax before catching our flight to Rio. The main square in very pretty and they have the nicest urban Christmas decorations I have ever seen. Things are a little quieter than I guess they normally are as 31st and 1st are national holidays here so lots of places are closed, unfortunately this has scuppered our plan was to wash all our clothes immediately upon arrival but the smell will just have to hang around until Tuesday.
