Alex: We spent a a couple of days in Lima not doing very much. We stayed in an area called Miraflores, which is a trendy area about 15km from the centre, where all the backpackers stay because rumor has it the centre isn't particularly safe at night. Miraflores was OK and quite cosmopolitan but nothing amazingly special, that said we never made out to sample the rest of Lima. The plan was to hang around Miraflores on our first day and then head into the centre of Lima on the second. First day went to plan, we did a bit of shopping (warm clothes in preparation for the Inca trail) and a few jobs that needed doing. Then we walked to the front to "Parque del Amor" or in English the park of love which was dominated by a statue of 2 people kissing and all the walls were mosaic with grafiti style love notes, quite cute really. From there we watched the surf and surfers on the beach below. All very pleasant and lazy...but wait it's about to get lazier. We were staying in the nicest and biggest hotel room we have been in for a while, and had a good selection of cable TV channels in English (including BBC World, which makes me very happy) which may have had an impact on our decision of how to spend our second day. We got up intending to go into Lima centre but over breakfast decided we were both feeling a bit lazy and couldn't quite be bothered so spent the day reading, watching TV and not doing much. We may have really missed out, Old Lima is meant to be very pretty and colonial and is a UNESCO World heritage centre, but we have seen about a dozen other pretty colonial towns/cities and are sure it can't be that different and we really enjoyed our lazy day...I do feel a little guilty though!
