Alex: Because of our little diversion to Panajachel and because we have seen quite a few pretty colonial towns recently we only spent one night in Antigua. The town is very pretty and surrounded by volcanoes which you can climb (something we fancied doing but Dean was still not quite better so we decided not to - later in the trip maybe) Antigua was the capital of Guatemala until an earthquake hit in 15 something. Some of the buildings are still un-restored which makes it interesting, we passed one church that just seemed to be a front and a couple of side walls if you looked through a gate all there was was lopsided pillars, crumbling walls and sky!
We stayed in a Hostel that was just celebrating being open 6 months. The celebrations started with beer at breakfast. We popped back at lunch just in time to see someone being arrested for running round the block in his undies (he only had to spend an hour at the police station and pay a fine of a few Quetzals and apparently it was the 9th time he had been arrested on his trip!) However the food served there seems to have sorted Dean out a bit (fingers crossed), it was very nice and Western!
We went back to the main square and night, which made good people watching and the cathedral was light up and pretty. Basically we didn't do much but had a nice time!
