Dean: From Flagstaff we headed down to Nogales on the Mexican border. The plan was to take our time crossing the border as we did not want to get caught up in any issues with the border guards, police, con-men etc. Well it did not go quite to plan...
We got off the Greyhound and went to the desk to see when the next coach across the border was heading off. The lady there pointed to a coach pulling out of the station, but said we could catch it on the other side of the border if we ran! We stupidly decided to go for it and ran down the hill and through the border crossing via the pedestrian route. We must have looked like the perfect gringo targets but luckily we were left alone. We managed to get all the way to the bus on the other side without having to show our passports to anyone! Luckily for us the driver was on the ball and took us back to the Immigration desk so we could get our Mexican permits! From there we took the bus down to Hermosillo.

Hermosillo was a bit of a culture shock for us! Our Spanish is far from adequate and the Mexican culture/life style is very different from ours (and what we have seen in Ecuador). On top of that there is not much (if any) tourist information in Hermosillo. To be honest we both felt a little out of our depth. We struggled through and planned out the next few days and in general made the most of it - it could be worse, we could be at work!!!

Alex: Hermosillo was the first place that made me feel like I wanted to go home. Just a bad place to start our Latin American adventure I think. As Dean said there was no tourist information that we could find and our guide book had no map, it is quite scary getting to a place not speaking the language and not knowing where you are. We found a map in the local yellow pages and walked to the centre according to that 2 km away, we found an internet cafe, googled Hermosillo and discovered we had walked 2 km out of our way, the centre was 2 minutes walk from our hotel, it may have been for the best though - there wasn't too much to do and our walk and the internet cafe kept us occupied for a good few hours! I think my major problem was I had been so keen and excited to get into Mexico that I hadn't thought about the problems we would face and was totally unprepared. It can only get better though!

Mexico - Wow
Glad you've arrived in Mexico. I bet it was sad leaving the States, you've seen so much and seem to have had a wonderful time. I am very impressed with all the photo's and I'm glad you've started putting yourselves in some of them as its lovely to see you and nice to prove you really have been there. Loved the one of Dean on the bench looked just like he does on our settee sometimes!
Love Mum and Dad M
