Where I stayed
Off early again, this time to Kanchanaburi – known best for a bridge , a railway and a river – Kwai.
The hotel is awesome, topped off with an infinity pool over looking the river and a view you don't really think exists – calm water, lily pads and reeds, a house boat all backed by glorious jungled mountains.
We started with a visit to the museum – a stark but fascinating look at the brutal conditions faced by the POWs and South-East-Asians who built the railway. A point hammered home by the cemetery across the road – one of 3 commonwealth POW cemeteries in the area, The bodies of the American POWs were repatriated and the graves of the 90,000 local peoples who dies we not moved. Also fascinating was the Chinese cemetery next door –graves that almost look like hobbit holes.
We made the most of the pool – glorious – before a trip to the night bazaar and our first disappointing food of the trip – maybe we should have made the effort and trekked to the night market proper.
