The flight wasn't too bad, the highlight being the 'sun’ loungers at Dubai airport – horizontal is good.

At 9am, when we got out of the airport, Bangkok was already getting hot. After freshening up in our (thankfully air conditioned) hotel room we headed out to explore a bit of the city. We decided to grab some food on the (in)famous Khao San Road. We were a little confused about time to say the least, so opted for fairly simple noodles in sauce washed down with a beer – start as we mean to go on!

Khao San doesn’t disappoint. It’s a traveller cliché on steroids (if that isn’t a cliché itself) – lots of tanned bodies in studiedly dishevelled clothes. The street is lined with bars and shops selling standard traveller fare  - harem pants, pretty printed dresses, flip flops and slogan t-shirts, with a Pad Thai cart thrown in at regular intervals.

We continued wandering the streets, finding our way to the Chao Phraya river  and Phra Sumen fort, and stopping at regular intervals for water or a sit down in the shade. This is hot regardless let alone after a chilly English winter.

Bangkok is, as we’d been told, noisy, ramshackle, hot, a bit dirty and smelly – and I think it is fair to say we love it already. Every street corner and any other spare spot is adorned with a food seller – if Thais ever cook at home I’d be amazed. The smells are amazing although – giving our stomachs a bit of a chance to adjust – we’ve yet to sample any of the food, plenty of time for that.

As we’d only managed about 8 hours sleep in the last 48 we took a well needed siesta before heading back to Khao San road for more noodles and beer (a diet I’m very fond of) and to watch the street transform – although I’m sure we left before it really got going…tomorrow night maybe.
