Where I stayed
Coachman Guest House, Swellendam
Heading back towards Cape Town today. We drove the long way round down the scenic R62. It was pretty spectacular, especially the mountain passes. That said the most spectacular pass was just after we turned off the R62 towards Swellendam,
The R62 starts in Oudtshoorn, surrounded by ostrich farms, just beyond the mountains that back the coast. It traverses a plain between two ridges of mountains, through a region known as Klein Karoo.
The scenery was, it has to be said, slightly diminished by the driving rain - although in this arid area it is obviously needed - the blue skies just set the mountains off.
Our overnight stop was Swellendam, conveniently located about half way between Cape Town and the Garden Route. So convenient in fact that this is our second stop here, we broke up our journey to Wilderness with a brief lunch break here. I was concerned that our guide book had misled us about this 'charming town' but once we got away from Voortrek Street - which, while full of shops, feels a little run down - the town is full of beautiful old thatched buildings and tree lined streets - our guest house, The Coachman, a prime example.
Pretty as it is I am keen to get to Cape Town tomorrow.
