Where I stayed
hostal sofie

We were nicely surprised when we came across hostal sofie in the dark and fog. A lady took us to a cosy lounge with a wood fire and cosy armchairs. We shared the hostel with a Japanese couple and decided to stay here for more than the 1 night we'd planned (4 more nights in the end). The town is not spoilt by the many tourists here, little wooden hostels and shops and an indoor Market. We took advantage of the hostel using it as a chance to get over our jet lag, cook homely meals in the nice kitchen and enjoy cheap Chilean wine. I've even managed to lean afew Spanish phrases, enough to get by. The best bit is the view of volcano vallerica, covered in snow and steam rising out of the top. It looks lovely from our kitchen window at sunset. ( I was a bit scared when they tested the volcano siren in the morning though!)

We caught a bus to parque nacionale huerquehue and did a 3 hr walk through the forest by the lake to a nice waterfall. We even saw some monkey puzzle trees on the way back.
