last night i dreamt of san pedro
it all seems like yesterday not far away
tropical the island breeze
all of nature wild and free
this is where i long to be
la isla bonita....
ladies, gents
am in belize, a much underappreciated country on the side of mexico. i am on la isla bonita, where that madonna song comes from.
when i got to belize, i was quite freaked out cause it is an english-speaking country. after all the spanish i had been surrounded with for the past few months, it was v v odd and i had to watch myself when i was talking about other people (none of that slagging off now!). the english they speak is a mixture of american blub and jamaican lingo. very strange. the people, however, are superbly friendly. mad chatterboxes, great caribbean music, the food is mainly fish and rice and beans, and the sun is shining...
needless to say, the country is v expensive. esp the island here. can't remember when i last paid $17 for a bed. the island, btw, is not bonita at all at the moment cause they have a problem with seagrass which seems to take up two meters into the sea so you can't swim. i even had to go to a swimming pool yday cause the sea is so gross here. i think they should rename it to la isla de grassa. hah! and it's also the first time that i wasn't served at ten to nine at night cause they "are closing"... refuse custom in mexico, brasil or argentina would be unimaginable!
anyway, the country is breaking my little traveller's bank so i am gonna get out. meeting steffen tomorrow and we are going to guatemala. after that, i am quite ready to come back to europe.. wherever i may land!!!
