A t-shirt, 2 long sleeve thermal tops, a fleece, my hoodie, a Goretex jacket, 2 sets of thermal pants, 3 pairs of socks, some gloves, a beanie and 30 minutes to put them all on. These are the extras we needed this morning as we cycled out of Karlsruhe in Germany on our way to Strasbourg in France.

________________________________________________________________________

Karlsruhe is a lively wealthy southern German city, it's home to Mercedes Benz, Siemens, Bosch and we also hear that Porsche is nearby as well. Add a university to the mix and it’s a pretty busy place. We only planned to stay there for one night, but due to a very late arrival and very vague plans as to where next on our way to Lisbon we decided to stay another.

When we left Karlsruhe today, with 90km to cycle the sun was shining and the temperature was -1. Over the next half hour the fog descended and remained with us for the rest of the day. Sounds totally miserable! But it’s really not so bad once the body warms through pedal power. And we discovered that even when our feet have turned into blocks of ice, they can still push the pedals, so no worries…. We had the added advantage of knowing that by this time tomorrow we’ll be in sunny warm Spain.

Cycle into France one day, and be in Spain the next, how can that be you ask?……....Train of course!! Yes another one, but I promise we have been doing lots of cycling….not one single German train and 1000km of riding.

We are currently at Strasbourg train station waiting for the 8.19pm overnight train to take us just over the Spanish border, to a town called Port Bou. From there is only about 180km and another train to Barcelona. We are looking forward to not wearing all of our clothes at the same time once again.
