Taman Negara is a jungle that has been dated back 130 million years.  I am not good enough at maths to know whether that is the same as 1.3 billion but I do know that that its old, seriously old.

To walk into the heart of Taman Negara takes days and is supposedly quite dangerous as it is  to wild boars, tigers and other jungle types.  I settled for one days trekking, partly because you need quite alot of gear to set off on anything overnight and partly because I am not great at camping at the best of times, let alone in a jungle.  Setting of with my Danish buddy Paul we ended up disappearing for about 6 hrs. We were pretty confident that we knew where we were most of the time as there are the occasional signs or herds of Chinese but for the most part it felt like we had the place to oursleves.  The humidity was incredible and made a fairly rigourous walk that little bit more exhausting but it was worth it.  The forest so dense, the trees so tall, it was how you would imagine a rainforest to be.  Twice we stumbled across wild boar, setting me off on a nervous giggling fit as they are actually pretty dangerous.  The only downside of the hike was mosquitos and leeches.  The leeches were pretty small but the mosquitos were bloody huge, and seemed immune to any kind of repellent, little bastards.

There are natives still lliving in TN and we stumbled across what I guess you would call a settlement. They live a pretty primitive existance, killing wild animals with poison darts, which I can assure you is not easy.

My route out of TN would be by river, whcih took me through the bits that would be impossible to reach by foot.  A truely stunning place.  Man can build amazing cities but left to do its thing, nature will always win in the wonder stakes.
