Last weekend a bunch of us Bules ('albinos' or 'foreigners') headed down to Java's south coast (a town called Palabuhan Ratu), where we were gathering to celebrate the 30th Birthday of Miss Jessica McCleod.

Knowledge of our accommodation, the famed -and affectionately dubbed 'Dr Seuss House'...by myself- had been passed down from foreigner to foreigner, and upon arrival, did not disappoint!

The house has 10+ rooms (I'm not sure, because new rooms kept being found) and is a hodge-podge, architectural wonder, with views of the ocean galore & more lounging areas than you can poke a stick at. It has a pool area, a gym, a pool table/games/party area downstairs, spiral staircases, a viewing tower sticking up on top of the roof, a main bedroom in a multi-coloured dome on stilts with a Buddha head that lights up on it and- let's just say it has everything and leave it at that!

The party was themed 'Under the Sea' in honor of Jess' love of diving (so that explains why I am dressed as a turtle- and the others as sharks, fish etc- in all the photos), and there was much dancing, laughing, swimming and relaxing to be had. The b'day cake- you have to see it to believe it- had an edible photo of Jess diving on it and was
too big to fit in the fridge! (thanks Andy!)

We also dressed Jess up as the 'Sea Queen', who is a fabled character that Indonesians believe carries people out to see if they dare to wear anything green (her colour). A few of us swam in green swimmers the next day, but we did dedicate a few songs to the queen whilst swimming, which may explain why we're still alive to tell the tale...

All in all, it was a great weekend retreat! I'd like to thank the Java 9 (as they affectionately became known) for joining us- amongst whom was Belinda & Ella, who were two old friends I studied with at UTS in ol' Sydney town & who are now living/working in Jakarta- was great to catch up with you guys! I'd also like to thank the token Austrian (you know who you are), for joining in with our silliness. May there be many more "Bule bule, mau ke mana" sing-a-longs to come!

xxx
