Day 2 at Kochogo

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Woke up to a sunny morning and trucked of in the direction of Kochogo, this time we had Marti with us and we went via a livestock market to find her a goat to give to a family she had got close to (so much so that the newborn was named Martina).

At the centre we washed the walls in preparation for fresh paint and painted some educational murals in the dinning hall, one giving English and Swahili translations for various Kenyan domestic and wild animals and the other body parts. We played with the kids, letting them model our sunnies, play fighting, some tennis and volleyball. Served up ugali, spinach and beef; ugali is actually really good, provide you have a really good hunger on you!

We listened to Easy FM. in the matatu it has some crazy stuff on it. 21 questions with famous and respected people asking question like, 'Do you ever call you wife fat?', hilarious to listen to. On Nairobi radio there is an even more scandalous show called 'Busted' where someone phones up suspecting their husband of cheating and provides the number of the alleged lover, then the show host calls them up and tricks them into admitting on live radio (of which they are unaware) that they are with the husband! The whole of Nairobi draws a sharp, dismayed breath when the accusations are proved to be true. 'If you were inspired by the show, just text 'CHEAT' to 22525 and get tips on catching your cheat!'

Kisumu is the ancestral home of Barack Obama and the whole place worships him to the extent that in the supermarkets you can buy (and I did!) Obama bubblegum!

I've been pleased to see in Kenya that women and people with disabilities don't appear to be 2nd class citizens as they are in India, we drive past places called things like 'Women's Empowerment centre' and 'School for the mentally handicapped', just their existence shows a more progressive attitude to that in India.

In the evening we headed to Laughing Buddha for drinks and pudding. I had a sublime carrot cake; it scored a 9 and made it into my top 5 carrot cakes ever!
