Only a bus ride away, Portugal was a natural choice for a beach vacation last week. Finishing up school before our 2nd spring holiday, a few friends from my program and I decided to get on the road towards Lagos. We wanted to stop somewhere smaller on the way to save a bit of money & we ended up in Albufeira.

Albufeira is about 2 hours away from Sevilla by car, so it worked out to be about 5 hours by bus. It is very deceiving... you think your so close but you never account for all the stops! Anyways - we got into town and discovered the benefits of less frequented cities - €8 per night got us our own 3 bed room with private bathroom and kitchen. They even threw in a pool - which wasn't used with the beach only 100 meters away. We quickly settled into a happy beach routine of relaxing on the sand & dipping into the refreshingly cool Atlantic.

The town was very, very touristy - we could hardly find any traces of the host Portuguese culture. English was spoken everywhere and tourist dives abundant. Fortunately the beach was the star attraction; else it would not have been such a good experience. We were there during the middle of the week but even still the night scene was very weak - the next youngest people we ran into were in their early 30's. We did encounter some good street music though - managed to catch a mean cover of Santana's Black Magic Woman.

After 2 days of relaxing and taking it easy we were ready for our next destination in the Algarve - Lagos.
